Rolls Royce breakthrough in Ultra Fan engines
The British manufacturer has begun testing its massive gearbox.
This move is an important step forward in the development of the range of UltraFan® engines that will be operational in 2025.
The UltraFan® engine it is designed with by fuel efficiency in mind (25% less than the first generation of Trent engines) and has an architecture to be implemented in both double-aisle and narrow-body aircraft.
This new gear reducer is designed to move larger fan diameters and obtain a very high bypass ratio. It also employs lighter metal fabrication technology with carbon / titanium blades, built onto composite materials. They also employ new ceramic coatings that are more heat resistant and require less cooling airflow.
These tests are performed at the Rolls Royce plant in Dahlewitz, Germany where they are tested under a power of 100,000 hp (the equivalent of more than 100 formula 1)
